Materials Needed
4-ply yarn: gray, red, white, blue, green and yellow
Head (body) can be any color
#4 or #5 (US) Straight knitting needles
Yarn needle for attaching the legs and sewing in yarn ends
Instructions
Cast on 10 stitches on needle. Leave a little tail for sewing up later.
Use "double knitting" or two sides at once - k1, Y forward, slip 1, Y back k1, etc. across the row.
Continue for nearly 2 inch, then carefully slip the stitches off the needle. Slide the needle into every other stitch. This will become the head.
Knit around once on wrong (purl) side. Then cast off knit-wise to make a ridge at the bottom. There will be a small gap between the edges, sew this up with the tails of the yarn.
Turn the head piece inside out and it's finished.
To make a separate leg, cast on 20 stitches in gray leaving a 4 or 5 inch tail. Knit across then cast off on the next row. Attach the leg to the head securely with the yarn needle.
Thread the yarn tails through the leg and tie to make the fringes.
